This page is where I will put resources as I develop them or find them.  They are not organized by family so much as by geography.

General Buchanan Resources

There are a few books that have been written that help Buchanan genealogist untangle the tree.  They are:

1) Strathendrick and Its Inhabitants from Early Times, by John Guthrie Smith.  This is the most accurate attempt at compiling the family from all the Buchanan branches.  This book used to be difficult to access outside of the U.K.   However, it is now available digitally at the following link: Strathendrick.

2) Historical and Genealogical Essay upon the Family and Surname of Buchanan. To which is added a brief enquiry into the genealogy and present state of ancient Scottish surnames, and more particularly of the Highland Clans, by William Buchanan, of Auchmar.  This was the first widely published genealogy for the Buchanan family.  Although there are errors, he does lay a lot of the ground work for future genealogy work.  Here is a link to digital copy: Auchmar.

3) In Search of Buchanan, by Irene Martin.  In addition to linking her own family to that of John Buchanan and Jane Russell (President Buchanan’s grandparents), Irene Martin does an excellent job of review social and migration issues associated with Buchanans going back to their first arrival in Scotland, through Ireland, and to other parts of the world.  The book is available from the Lancaster Historical Society, PA.  230 North President Avenue, Lancaster, PA 17603 (717) 392-4633.

Patty, David Byrne from the Clan Buchanan Society sent my email on to you. I am inquiring about my husband’s family on his mother’s side. Her father was Robert Campbell Buchanan (7/18/1878 – 5/5/1968) and her grandfather was William R. Buchanan (1/8/1854 – 7/24/1941), according to their tombstones on the old farm in Tazewell, Tn. We are planning a trip to Scotland next year and we were hoping to find some family history before we go. Could you please help us get started. Thank you so much for anything you can do.

    • Patty says:

I will try and get back to you after I have had a chance to review what you have. You might try ordering birth, marriage and death certificates for Robert and William. Also 1860 census might have William with his parents.
