Gardner (Garner)

I have two Garner/Gardner connections, both from Blackpool.   The lines are possibly related.  There is a large concentration of Gardner/Garners in Cockerham parish in the 1500 and 1600’s.  Some of the lines that are possibly connected to my Second Gardner line perhaps to descend from the Cockerham parish Gardners.

First Garner/Gardner line

The spelling of the name for this first family is Gardner, Garner and Gardiner, interchangeably. Timothy Gardner was apparently from the Garstang area.  He was born about 1685 and was dead before 1742.  He is mentioned in the Guild Entry rolls of Preston: Richard Gardner, of Poulton, barber, son of Timothy Gardner (now deceased) late of Garstang in the Guild entry rolls on 30 AUG 1742.  He is listed again in the Guild entry rolls: Richard Gardner, now of Garstang, barber, son of Timothy Gardner on 30 AUG 1762.  Timothy had at least one child, the Richard mentioned in the Guild entry Rolls of Preston, who was bc 1715.

Richard Gardner, of Poulton, was a barber and was born about 1715.  He had: Solomon Gardner, c 6 NOV 1741, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England; Amey Gardner, c 14 MAR 1745, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England; Mary Gardner, c 9 DEC 1747, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England; Richard Gardner c 7 AUG 1751; and Susannah Gardner c 2 JAN 1759, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England.

Solomon Gardner was christened 6 NOV 1741, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England.  He married Ellen Parkinson on 5 DEC 1762, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England.  There was a Solomon Gardner in the Guild Entry Rolls of Preston, son of Richard Gardner, barber of Poulton that is likely this Solomon.  See my Parkinson page for information on Ellen.  They had: Timothy, c 24 DEC 1763/4, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England, bur 27 DEC 1763/4, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England; Richard c 11 APR 1765, St. Paul. Marton, Lancashire, England; William c 11 JAN 1767, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England; and Jane c 31 JUL 1768, St. Chad, Poulton le Fylde, Lancashire, England.

Richard Gardner was christened 11 APR 1765, St. Paul. Marton, Lancashire, England.  He married Elizabeth Lytham in Poulton, Lancashire, England.  See my Lytham page for information on Elizabeth.  They had: Thomas (b 1794) Nanny or Nancy (b 1798), Richard (b 1801), William (b 1803), Elizabeth (b 1805; d 1857), Ellen (b 1807), John (b 1810) and Alice (b 1811).

Elizbeth Gardner/Garner (b 1805; d 1857).  She married first Edward Hopkinson (b 1783, Bury, Lancashire, England; d 1833).  She married second Thomas Houseman.  For descents with Edward Hopkinson, see Hopkinson page.  With Thomas Houseman she had Emma (b 1840; d 1867), Elizabeth (b 1842), Nanny (b 1844; d 1879), and Margaret (b 1845).

Second Garner/Gardner line

The second line is from the Medlar/Greenall (Greenhalgh) area.  James Garner married Jennet Hall on 14 APR 1691, Kirkham, Lancashire, England.   For information on Jennet, see my Hall page.  They had: Mary c 30 NOV 1693, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire (she married Cuthbert Cardwell); Janet/Jane Garner c 26 APR 1696, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire (she married Robert Jackson); Thomas Garner c 6 MAR 1698, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire, bur 21 APR 1709, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire; Anne c 1 MAR 1701, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire (she married Richard Banks); and John c 12 MAR 1703, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire.  He names several of his children in his will, names Cuthbert Cardwell as executor, and his son John received the bulk of his estate.

It seems there were 2 John Garners of Medlar, or the same John Garner married a second time.  John married in 1730 Janet Threlfall, and Cuthbert Cardwell was the bondsman.  The second John was married to Ann (her last name is unknown) and was in Greenall until around 1735.  By 1737 he was in Medlar.  I have been unable to find children for John and Janet.  The second John who married Ann is described below and for now is assumed to be the son of James Garner and Jennet Hall.

John Garner was christened 12 MAR 1703, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire.  He married Ann, whose last name is unknown.  They had: Ellen c 31 AUG 1729, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire; James bc 1731, bur OCT 1731; Ellen c 1 APR 1733, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire; Alice c 24 MAY 1735, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire; Elizabeth c 28 AUG 1737, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire; James c 18 FEB 1739, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire; Thomas c 17 JAN 1743, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire; Margaret c 4 OCT  1744, Kirkham, Lancashire, England; Mary c 18 JUN 1747, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire; John c 26 APR 1749, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire, bur 26 APR 1749, St. Michael, Kirkham, Lancashire.

Margaret Garner/Gardner  was christened 4 OCT  1744, Kirkham, Lancashire, England.  She married Thomas Lytham (b 1741) on 10 JUL 1770, Kirkham, Lancashire, England.  Margaret was from Medlar at the time of her marriage.  See my Lytham page for information on Thomas.  They had Elizabeth (c 30  JUN 1771, Bispham with Norbreck, Lancashire, England; d 1858), Ann (c 26 SEP  1773, Bispham with Norbreck, Lancashire, England), and Nanny (bc 1774)

Elizabeth Lytham (c 30  JUN 1771, Bispham with Norbreck, Lancashire, England; d 1858) the daughter of Margaret Garner/Gardner (b 1749) married Richard Garner/Gardner (bc 1766) from the first Garner/Gardner line above.
